Degree Programs Offered by The UNO Philosophy Program


The Philosophy Program offers a major or minor in philosophy as part of the Bachelor of Arts degree.  It does not offer a master's degree.  The general BA Requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences are required for philosophy majors and minors. Proposed Course rotation is outlined below requirements.

Philosophy Major

33 credit hours in philosophy, 21 hours of which must be upper division

Lower division courses must include:

1. Critical Reasoning (1210) or Symbolic Logic (2010). Logic is strongly recommended for students who wish to be recommended for graduate school in philosophy
2.Introduction to Ethics (2030)

Upper division courses* must include:

1. History of Ancient Philosophy (3110)
2. History of Modern Philosophy (3130)
3. Theory of Knowledge (3600)
4. Metaphysics (3700)
5. Ethical Theory (3050)

Recommended Courses:

ONE of the following is strongly recommended:

Philosophy of Natural Science (3400)  or Philosophy of the Social Science (3410)

ONE of the following is also strongly recommended:

Social Philosophy (3210)
Philosophy of Religion (3200)

Philosophy of Art (3220)

Philosophy minor:

1. Critical Reasoning (1210) or Symbolic Logic (2010)
2. Contemporary Moral Problems (1020) or Introduction to Ethics (2030)
3. 12 hours of upper division courses* in philosophy

*Upper Division Courses are only those at the 300 level or above.

Students majoring in philosophy will want to know how frequently the required and recommended courses will be offered.  Students who need philosophy courses for other subjects will also need to know how frequently the relevant courses will be offered.  The following is a list of how often certain important courses will be offered as agreed upon by the Philosophy Program:
