Latin American Study Abroad

A UNO program focused on developing academic partnerships in Latin America and providing study abroad experiences for students has received $115,000 grant from the University of Nebraska Foundation.
The grant supports Latin America–UNO (LAUNO) Partnerships, a program created in collaboration with the Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS), Service Learning Academy, Department of Biology, and Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. With the funding, LAUNO will offer study abroad opportunities to South America, including Peru and Costa Rica, and will integrate service learning aspects and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs.

International Service Learning and Study Abroad in Perú

The Office of Latino/Latin American Studies has been sending students to Perú since 2008 to engage in cross-cultural and international service learning and study abroad. Some of the highlights of past trips include: visiting Machu Picchu, constructing modules and repairing a child care center/preschool in San Juan de Miraflores shantytown outside of Lima, meeting with policy advisors and officials to discuss the history and future of Perú, site visits to different areas within Lima including historical landmarks. You will take an online class in order to learn about the aspects of urbanization in Latin America that you will witness once in Perú, and once you arrive in Lima, you will meet your professor Dr. Celle who lives in Miraflores District, Lima, Perú. The 2013 trip features a tuition scholarship provided by the University of Nebraska Foundation, collaboration with the UNO Biology Department, UNO Service Learning Academy, and the Universidad Antonio Ruiz de Montoya in Lima, Peru. For further information, visit the Peru 2013 homepage.

Brazil: Critical Issues

Brazil: Critical Issues 2013 is the second year of a pilot project developed to support the University of Nebraska's global engagement priority to offer the opportunity for significant international experiences to students, this is a three credit hour course that combines: a) distance learning and survival Portuguese prior to departure, b) on-site study abroad and basic Portuguese language instruction at the University of São Paulo at Piracicaba's Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture, and c) a service-learning project at a local community organization. Spring 2013
International Social Work in Nicaragua

Travel Dates: May 4-14, 2013
We will enjoy visiting clinics and orphanages in Managua before traveling to our sister university, UNAN-Leon where we will meet with the social work students and present information to three social work classes. We will also visit the school for deaf children in Leon and talk with Nicaraguan students studying English. During the ten days we will also have time to visit a number of beautiful sites in Nicaragua such as Momotombo Volcano. Be sure to enroll in SOWK 4890/8900-801: Special Studies in Social Work: Nicaragua for the spring semester to qualify! Community members are welcome to join the trip.
