Bruce and Karen Baker Lecture Series Kicks Off with Cather Lecture
Omaha - Andrew Jewell, associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), will present a program entitled ‘The time is very dark’: Willa Cather's Last Decade on Thursday, November 7, at 7 p.m. in the Thompson Alumni Center west of the Dodge Street Campus.
Dr. Jewell, editor of the online Willa Cather Archive and co-editor of the recently-published The Selected Letters of Willa Cather, is one of the country’s foremost experts on the life and works of Cather, considered by many as Nebraska’s most widely known author.
Jewell will draw on Cather’s personal correspondence as well as other materials to examine the troubled last decade of Cather’s life and how it has influenced biographers and critics since her death in 1947.
This lecture is the first in a series named in honor of Bruce Baker, longtime UNO professor of English, and his wife, Karen. Bruce and Karen Baker recently established the lecture with a gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation. The department of English is also helping to sponsor the Jewell event.
A book signing by Jewell and light refreshments will follow the presentation. For more information, please contact the UNO English Department at 402.554.3476.
