Young Minnesota Artists Focus of Next UNO Gallery Exhibit

Omaha - Two young artists from Minnesota will be the focus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Art Gallery’s upcoming exhibition.

Starting Monday, Oct. 14, and running through Thursday, Nov. 14, the UNO Art Gallery will showcase the paintings of Nate Burbeck and drawings of Joel Starkey, which address issues found in nature and how nature co-exists with urban life and contemporary culture.

Burbeck’s recent paintings consist of large panoramic landscapes depicting isolated moments of the surreal within the context of modern life. His scenes explore and externalize the psychological underpinnings of American society with fantastical and dreamlike elements.

Starkey, a graphic designer and instructor, explores the place where the planned meets the unplanned. Using found imagery of architectural plans and natural formations as primary sources, Starkey combines erased, obscured, gestural lines that suggest an untamed natural world coupled with more exact, yet still handmade geometric forms.

Burbeck received a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. In 2009 and Starkey holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing from Kansas State, which he earned in 2006.

On Nov. 14 there will be a gallery talk featuring the artists from noon to 1 p.m. and a closing reception to honor the artists held from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. that same day.

UNO Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday. In addition, appointments at other times are encouraged.

All events are free and open to the public and the gallery is accessible to people with disabilities.

Appointments or special arrangements can be made by calling Denise Brady, gallery coordinator, at 402.554.2796.

For media inquiries, please contact Charley Reed, media relations coordinator, at unonews@unomaha.edu or by phone at 402.554.2129.
