UNO a Top Military Friendly School for Fifth Year

Omaha - G.I. Jobs magazine and Victory Media have named the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) one of its top Military Friendly Schools for 2014, marking five consecutive years of recognition.

By making the list, UNO is considered to be in the top 20 percent of schools nationwide for embracing America’s veterans and families as students and helping provide the resources to ensure their success.

UNO has been committed to supporting active duty and veteran students for over 60 years, beginning with the U.S. Air Force instituting the Bootstrap program at UNO in 1951.

Central to our effort is UNO’s one-stop office for military and veteran students known as MaV USO (Military and Veterans University Services Office), which was established in 2011 and dedicated by Secretary of State Chuck Hagel, a UNO alumnus.

MaV USO assists with every step of the transition between military and academic life including G.I. Bill assistance, in-processing as well as academic mentoring and support. The office also contains space for veteran students to work on homework and connect with other students.

“Our office is a valuable resource to military and veteran students and we strive to be the best, but it’s the campus-wide attitude of teamwork that allows us to be a top military friendly school,” said Mike Wieneke, assistant director of MaV USO.

UNO offers many additional military-focused programs and services that help our over 1,000 military-affiliated students, including:

- An online Bachelor of General Studies that was ranked No. 5 nationally by U.S. News & World Report for military students
- Advising and distance learning services at Offutt Air Force Base
- A waiver of application fees for military veterans beginning with the Fall 2013 semester
- Flexible deployment policy

Now in its fifth year, the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 10,000 schools nationwide approved for VA tuition funding. Complete survey methodology is available at militaryfriendlyschools.com/Article/methodology-press-kit.
