UNO Waives Application Fee for Military, Veteran Students
Omaha - As of Fall 2013, military and veteran students looking to attend the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) will no longer need to worry about an application fee after a decision was made to waive the cost for all new applicants and refund the fee for previous Fall 2013 semester applicants.
The decision, which affects undergraduate and graduate students, was announced today by UNO administration and UNO’s Military and Veteran University Services Office (MaV USO).
UNO is the first university in the University of Nebraska system to offer such a waiver.
“UNO has a long tradition of serving military and veteran students. Eliminating the application fee is the next step in continuing that dedication to serving those who have served us,” said Jennifer Carroll, director of MaV USO.
UNO has begun contacting those who are eligible for a refund. There are approximately 200 students for Fall 2013 that have already applied and will receive refunds.
To receive a refund for the Fall 2013 application fee, students will need to provide the Office of Undergraduate Admissions or the Office of Graduate Studies with one of the following documents as proof of military status:
- Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE)
- Military Orders
UNO officially opened MaV USO in April 2012. The office is responsible for providing support services and student programming that ensures the successful recruitment, transition, academic progress and graduation of students who are military, veteran or dependents.
UNO alumnus and current United States Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel formally dedicated the office on November 2, 2012.
In addition to MaV USO, UNO has an office on Offutt Air Force Base; a nationally ranked online degree program; and a flexible deployment policy. More than 1,100 active military and veteran students are currently enrolled at UNO.
UNO’s military friendliness has been acknowledged by Military Times magazine, which ranked UNO as the sixth in the country, and U.S. News and World Report, which has listed UNO’s online Bachelor of General Studies degree as the one of the top five military friendly online degree programs in the country. UNO is also considered a Yellow Ribbon school by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
MaV USO Offices are located on the UNO campus in Eppley Administration Building Room 117, and in the Education Center on Offutt Air Force Base, or can be accessed virtually at www.unomaha.edu/military.
