U.S. Men's Wheelchair Basketball Team to Practice on UNO Campus June 13-15

Omaha - The U.S. Men's Wheelchair basketball team isn't just traveling anywhere to practice before competing in this August's American Cup - they are traveling to one of the country's premiere athletic facilities, which just happens located on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).

America’s representatives in the growing sport of wheelchair basketball will be practicing Thursday, June 13, through Saturday, June 15, at the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) building in preparation for the American Cup, which will take place in Bogota, Columbia this August.

The public is invited to attend the team’s final practice on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. There is no cost to attend the practice.

Mike Kult, assistant director of facilities for HPER and coach of the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 National Wheelchair Basketball Association champion Nebraska Red Dawgs, is an assistant coach for the team.

“It’s great to have athletes of this caliber practicing on the UNO campus, “ said Kult. “Anyone who comes out to Saturday’s practice is going to see something really special and really entertaining, as well.”

At the Americas Cup, the men’s national team will take on representatives from the rest of North America, Central America and South America from Aug. 2 – 12.

A good showing at the Americas Cup will allow the U.S. team to compete in the World Champsionships in Goyang City, South Korea next November. The U.S. won a world title at the 2002 games in Japan.

Media are welcome to attend portions of any of the practices held on the UNO campus. For questions or requests to attend a practice, please contact Charley Reed, media relations coordinator, at 402.554.2129 or by email at cdreed@unomaha.edu
