Last Chance to Donate to MaverickPR’s Backpack Drive for Teens in Need

Omaha - MaverickPR, the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), is making a final push for donations of food, clothing and hygiene supplies to help fill 100 backpacks, which will then be donated to Youth Emergency Services (YES), a local non-profit that serves homeless and at-risk youth.

The “Say YES: Give Back with a Pack” drive began at the start of November and has extended it’s donation deadline to Dec. 7.

Donations needed include body wash, soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, gloves, first aid items and non-perishable food. Socks and underwear packages are especially needed.

Donations can be dropped off in Arts and Sciences Hall Room 140 on UNO’s Dodge Street campus. Cash donations should be put in an envelope marked “UNO PRSSA-YES Backpack Drive.”

For more than 35 years YES has served struggling youth, ages 12 to 21 in Omaha and Council Bluffs, by providing critically needed resources that empower them to become self-sufficient. YES served more than 800 homeless and at-risk youth from 2010 - 2011 alone, through shelter and advocacy programs.

MaverickPR offers students a wide range of opportunities for professional development and community engagement. PRSSA recently awarded the UNO chapter with its highest honor, the 2012 F.H. Teahan National Award for Outstanding Chapter. In 2011, the chapter earned campus recognition as Outstanding Student Organization.
