Accounting Department Speaker Series Starts on Friday

Omaha - TThe Department of Accounting at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) will kick off its speaker series on Friday, Sept. 28, with a pair of presentations. The morning-long event starts with check-ins at 7:30 a.m. Presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. at Mammel Hall, the home of the College of Business Administration at 67th and Pine Streets.

The keynote speaker is Jay Hanson. Hanson was appointed by the Securities and Exchange Commission to be a member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board in January 2011. Prior to joining the Board, Hanson spent nearly 32 years at McGladrey & Pullen, LLP, where he worked with a variety of clients ranging from small nonprofit organizations to large multi-national public companies. At the time of his departure, Mr. Hanson was the National Director of Accounting. He also has served on the Emerging Issues Task Force of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and on the Financial Reporting Executive Committee of the AICPA. His presentation begins at 8:45 a.m.

The ethics speaker is Weston Smith. Smith speaks frequently on ethics and integrity within business. He is passionate about teaching others the fruits of living and working responsibly and the consequences of unethical conduct based on his first-hand experience with fraud. Smith is a former CFO of Healthsouth Corporation, a “Wall Street darling” in the healthcare industry that, at one time, had over 2000 facilities covering all 50 States. After participating in a multi-year multi-billion dollar financial statement fraud at Healthsouth, Smith voluntarily exposed the fraud to the government and accepted responsibility for his own actions. He speaks at 10:45 a.m. The fee to attend is $60 for the public. Students may attend for free. Registration is online at nbdc.unomaha.edu/speakers.
