UNO International Business Program to Graduate Nine
Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) International Professional Development (IPD) program will graduate nine professionals from five countries this Friday, June 29. During the eight-week course, participants exchanged cultural and professional perspectives with each other, learned about Omaha’s international business community and worked on their English skills – all in a business context.
In addition to language classes and collaborative activities, IPD participants gain knowledge directly from global industry leaders in Omaha. Topics in this session ranged from robotics to sports marketing to healthcare innovation.
In mid-May, this session’s participants attended the Midwest International Trade Association (MITA) World Trade Conference at the Embassy Suites in La Vista. There, they heard Gov. Dave Heineman and other leaders speak about the importance of international trade to Nebraska businesses.
Seminar sponsors included the Child Saving Institute, the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, the Lied Transplant Center, United Way of the Midlands, Ellison Technologies, the Omaha Community Playhouse, and organizers of the Cox Classic.
Dozens of Omaha companies and organizations – including lawyers, healthcare professionals and entrepreneurs – have partnered with IPD since 1989, providing seminars, corporate site visits and other learning opportunities. IPD Manager Ed Quinn said that these partners have shown participants the diversity of Omaha’s businesses and nonprofit.
“Our partners, including companies and organizations from the public and private sectors, allow IPD participants to directly experience the professional culture and language of the Midwest,” Quinn said. “And our partners benefit, too. By meeting our participants, they gain new insights from around the world.”
IPD offers five eight-week sessions regularly during the year. The program also works with international clients to develop custom courses for the specific needs of their businesses and organizations.
About 60 professionals complete the program each year. This session’s nine participants and their home countries include:
Dmitry Abramov, Russia
Masamitsu Agatsuma, Japan
Noboru Araki, Japan
Aysegul Eren, Turkey
Elbas Ferreira, Brazil
Keisuke Ono, Keisuke, Japan
Elvira Peterson, Mexico
Kumi Taira, Japan
Masahito Yoshida, Japan
