UNO to Host High School Investment Competition With Keynote From NBA Star Allan Houston
Omaha - Omaha-area high school students will get a chance to show off their investment skills for some of the Nebraska’s top executives as part of an educational competition put on by C4K (College for Kids) on Saturday, May 26 at UNO.
Saturday’s event, “C4K on Display,” will also feature a keynote address by Allan Houston, a former NBA player, American Olympian and current assistant general manager for the New York Knicks. The address will cap the half-day-long competition at Mammel Hall, 6708 Pine St., which begins at 9:30 a.m. with a breakfast and opening remarks from Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle.
C4K is the signature program of the Leadership Institute for Urban Education (LIUE), whose mission is the “elimination of poverty through education, financial literacy and economic empowerment” of urban males.
Saturday’s competition will feature students making persuasive presentations on the investment potential of companies they have selected and tracked over the past year. Judges for the competition include Joe Ricketts, CEO of HUGO Enterprises; Bob Whitehouse, chairmen of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents; Tony Augilera, senior account executive at UPS; and Leo Eledge, CEO of Heritage Capital Management.
“My philosophy with C4K is to continually challenge and stretch the boys to reach for a higher level,” said Paul Bryant, director of LIUE. “I believe events [like C4K on Display] have the potential to be life changers.”
Following the LIUE event, Houston will host a celebrity 3-point shoot out and free-throw contest. The event will be hosted in the Sapp Fieldhouse, located on the UNO campus, starting at 2 p.m.
Both events are open to the public.
