Senior Wins $1,000 in Video Contest
Omaha - A University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) senior will receive a $1,000 scholarship for placing third in a national contest sponsored by textbook and software publishers McGraw-Hill Education.
Luis López, a business major, placed third in a contest that asked students from across the country to submit a one-minute video that showed how technology is improving their learning experience. López’s video focused on the importance of McGraw-Hill’s Connect program in helping him keep up to date with his schoolwork while studying abroad in Spain.
“My younger brother, Gerson, who studies at PKI (The Peter Kiewit Institute), and I had forgotten about the deadline and started the video the night before it was due,” López joked. “We ended going to bed at 7 AM that day."
López used Adobe After Effects to create his video and included some additional 3D modling and rendering.
“I just wanted to give my little brother a gift for his birthday, since it was a few days after the competition deadline, but I didn't have much money,” he added. “Now that I landed in the top three, I will be able to buy him something.”
López beat out over 100 other entrees, which was judged by a panel of top academics, leading third-party education organizations and members of the media who cover issues dealing with technology’s impact on the classroom. Winners were selected based on creativity, originality, theme communication and the number of votes received from the public during a public voting period.
“It is so inspiring to see students use McGraw-Hill Connect in such a creative, unique way and participate in a contest that showcases how they learn differently,” said Brian Kibby, president of McGraw-Hill Higher Education. “We thank all those who participated and offer congratulations to all of our winners, and are so inspired by seeing these students engaged in their own learning and we’re seeing great results.”
The first and second-place winners received scholarships of $5,000 and $2,000 respectively; other prizes handed out to the runners up included an iPad and iPod. Fifty awards were given out in all.
