Jazz Performances to be Held at UNO April 12, 17
Omaha - The Department of Music at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) will be holding two jazz performances on the UNO campus on Thursday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 17.
The UNO Jazz Ensembles, under the direction of Pete Madsen, director of Jazz studies, and Jason Johnson, artist trumpet faculty at UNO, will present an evening of big band jazz on April 12 in the Strauss Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. The concert will feature the music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Bob Florence, Bob Brookmeyer and Maynard Ferguson.
Joining the UNO jazz ensembles will be the Metropolitan Area Youth Jazz Orchestra (MAYJO). MAYJO is an auditioned group of high school students from the metro area that rehearses at UNO and performs several concerts each semester.
"We are excited to present this concert of varied big band literature featuring some of the fine young talent from our city and university,” Madsen said. “Audience members of all ages are welcome."
On April 17, the UNO Jazz Combos and Vocal Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Madsen, Johnson, and Kim Lomax, director of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, will be presenting an evening of instrumental and vocal jazz in the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom. The concert will feature standard jazz compositions as well as original student works.
"We are proud of our jazz combo program at UNO,” Madsen said. “The combos' main focus is improvisation which makes for an exciting and spontaneous concert experience."
Tickets for both events are $5 for the general public and $4 for students with a MavCard as well as seniors. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
