National Dance Association Honors UNO's Metal-Corbin

Omaha - The National Dance Association (NDA) will recognize a University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) professor at the annual American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) conference in Boston later this month.

Josie Metal-Corbin, the Margaret Killian Diamond Professor in the College of Education, is the NDA’s 2012 Scholar/Artist and will present a lecture titled “Dancing in Place: Site-Specific Work” at AAHPERD on Friday, March 16. The honor recognizes Metal-Corbin’s 40-plus years of dance scholarship, instruction and performance.

Metal-Corbin, who has worked at UNO since 1980 is also the director of UNO’s modern dance company, The Moving Company, which has won awards locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. A life-long performer, Metal-Corbin has also individually been awarded with honors from the Carnegie Foundation, Nebraska Arts Council, National Dance Association, YWCA and others.

Metal-Corbin’s lecture at the AAHPERD conference will chronicle her four decades of working with artists, educators, librarians and scientists in the United States, as well as in Great Britain, Jamaica, Portugal, France and Italy. Location is particularly important to Metal-Corbin as an inspiration and guide for her choreography.

“The kinetic language of dance and the visual impact of specific environments provide provocative opportunities for collaborations wherein the site becomes the framework or map for the dance design,” Metal-Corbin is quoted as saying in the NDA’s most recent newsletter.

Metal-Corbin has published extensively in the area of movement for older adults and the integration of arts into school curriculums.
