UNO PR Students Hold Events to Educate on Childhood Obesity

Omaha - Health experts consider childhood obesity an epidemic and statistics have tripled in the past 30 years. Today, one in three children is obese.

To help educate the community, a team from MaverickPR, the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSSA) has launched “Ready, Set, Start! To a Healthy Heart” campaign.

In partnership with the American Heart Association-Midwest Affiliation, the team will hold a “Family Field Night” at the CenturyLink Center on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. The free event takes place before the UNO Mavericks-University of Minnesota hockey game. The night features family friendly and interactive activities and educational information. Families who complete all activity stations will be entered to win prizes that include UNO hockey and men’s basketball season tickets.

Other “Ready, Set, Start! To a Healthy Heart” events are:

• Sunday, Feb. 5 - Kroc Center Super Bowl Party - 4:30 p.m.
• Sunday, Feb. 5 - Skate With the Mavs Event - 1 to 4 p.m. - CenturyLink Center Omaha
• Monday, Feb. 13 - Kroc Center - 6 p.m.
• Saturday, Feb. 18 - Omaha Children’s Museum “Let’s Move” program - 4 p.m.

The campaign is designed to increase awareness among children, teenagers and their parents of the serious short and long-term consequences of obesity, inform them of the steps they can take to adopt a healthier lifestyle and provide incentives to take action. Research shows that children of low-income families are most vulnerable because lean meats and fresh fruits and vegetables cost much more than starchy, high calorie items.

“We believe our efforts will help reverse the rising trend of childhood obesity by holding this family-oriented event to advocate for healthy lifestyles through education and outreach,” said Jenneken Beernink, campaign director.

This campaign is part of the 2012 PRSSA National Bateman Case Study Competition, which is the premier national case study competition for public relations students. The competition gives students an opportunity to apply their classroom education and internship experiences to create and implement a full public relations campaign. The client-of-record is United Way Worldwide and the sponsor is General Mills.
