Criss Library Given $25,000 for Newspaper Archive
Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) Criss Library was recently given a gift of $25,000 by The UNO Library Friends, a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is to support the Criss Library. The gift will be used to fully acquire the Early American Newspapers and Documents collection, which includes over 710 historical American newspapers.
Before the gift, the Criss Library only held a fraction of the entire collection. The pieces held by the library were on microfilm, which has worn out and grown fragile due to age and use.
As a result of this gift, the 710 newspapers, which date back as early as 1690, will be available to UNO students, faculty and staff via the Criss Library website. In addition to news stories, those who can access the archives can also find advertisements, election results and wedding notices, just to name a few of the options available.
“The UNO Library Friends recognized the importance of this historical information, which is used by classes in history, researchers in a number of fields and community members interested in genealogy and American history,” said Steve Shorb, Dean of the Criss Library.
The $25,000 donation is just one of many gifts given to the Criss Library over the last five years, including group study rooms and significant additions to the library’s children's literature collection.
The Criss Library Friends have about 400 members and sponsor book talks, poetry readings, library gallery exhibitions, recognition for library student employees and support the general needs of the library. The group also volunteers for library events such as the Scholastic Book Fair, and community literacy activities.
