Student Short Story Contest Seeks Original Nebraska Works

Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Department of Foreign Languages, Masters of Arts in Language Teaching (MALT) and the Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) have partnered with the Nebraska Humanities Council to offer a creative writing in Spanish contest, open to all Nebraska students, grades five through 12.

“Through Our Words: Hands, Minds and Hearts at Work,” which is in its third year, encourages students to submit short stories or illustrated short stories in Spanish. The contest celebrates the Spanish language across the state of Nebraska and encourages its creative use among bilingual, heritage speakers and speakers of Spanish as a second language.

Guidelines are as follows:

• All submissions must be 250-600 words in length.
• Illustrations may be black and white, or color in any media. No clip art will be accepted.
• Co-authored works and author-illustrator teams are welcome.

All submissions, along with required registration forms and parental permission forms, which are available at www.unomaha.edu/ollas, should be sent by Saturday, March 24 to:

Submissions can also be sent via email to csgarcia@unomaha.edu.

“The Spanish creative writing contest is an opportunity for both heritage speakers and students of Spanish as a second language to claim creative ownership of the language and explore new landscapes within and outside themselves,” said Claudia Garcia, assistant professor of Spanish at UNO and contest organizer. “Because of the growth of the Latino and Latin American immigrant population in our state, it’s important to recognize the Spanish language as a relevant Latino contribution to American culture, and to celebrate it through writing.”

Submissions will be judged by the following grade levels:
• Fifth and sixth
• Seventh and eighth
• Ninth and 10th
• 11th and 12th

There will be prizes for first and second place in each category. Honorary mentions will receive award certificates. Winners will be announced during a special ceremony in April at UNO.

Created in 1973 as a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Nebraska Humanities Council is an independent, nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer board of public and academic members. The Nebraska Humanities Council funds programs that explore Nebraska’s heritage, build community awareness, and strengthen ties to cultural traditions at home and abroad.
