UNO Veterans Help Raise Awareness for Children in Need

Omaha - Working to foster a spirit of giving and community service, The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) Veteran Student Organization (VSO) is launching Toys for Tickets; an event aimed at helping local children.

The UNO Athletic Department will grant admission to the Wednesday, Dec. 7 UNO women's basketball game against the College of St. Mary to anyone who donates a new, unwrapped toy to Toys for Tots, a charitable organization gathering toy donations for children in need.

The partnership with Toys for Tots is just one of several events that the UNO VSO has engaged in this holiday season.

The VSO is also actively supporting Toyland, a combination of theatrical performance and fashion show created and hosted by Carl Hartman and sponsored by community donations.

In an effort to raise money for the Toyland event itself, the VSO recently conducted a month-long telethon. During weekly meetings, VSO members called local business, promoted Toyland and solicited donations for the events. So far, the VSO’s cold-calling strategy has raised $150.00 for Toyland, which premieres at Omaha’s House of Loom at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17.

The VSO has also had recent success with its support for the local Omaha community by partnering with the U.S. Marine Corps. The VSO and Marine Corps hosted a two-day event Nov. 21 – 22 in the Milo Bail Student Center on the campus of UNO. The event raised more than $200 in additional funds for Toys for Tots.

In addition to the two-day student donation drive, the VSO involved faculty and staff by placing toy drop-boxes in each building on campus.

Thanks in part to these efforts, the UNO VSO hopes to continue to build a relationship with Toys for Tots and other charitable organizations in order to conduct similar outreach efforts next holiday season and beyond.
