MaverickPR Organizes Backpack Drive for Homeless, At-Risk Teens

Omaha - With the goal of assisting Omaha’s homeless and at-risk teens, MaverickPR, the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) hopes to deliver at least 100 backpacks filled with food, clothing items and hygiene supplies to Youth Emergency Services (YES), a local non-profit that serves homeless and at-risk youths.

In April 2011, a street team counted 400 youth living on the streets in the Omaha. This is estimated to be only a fraction of the actual number of homeless youth in the city. The YES backpack drive began Nov. 7 and runs through Nov. 30 with students, faculty members and staff encouraged to drop of donations in 140 Arts and Sciences Hall. Items needed include: body wash, soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, gloves and non-perishable food items.

YES serves struggling youth, ages 12 to 21, by providing critically needed resources that empower them to become self-sufficient. YES served more than 800 homeless and at-risk youth in 2010-11 alone.

MaverickPR offers students a wide range of opportunities for professional development and community engagement. In 2009, PRSSA awarded the UNO chapter with its highest honor, the F.H. Teahan National Chapter Award for Outstanding Chapter. In 2011, the chapter earned campus recognition as Outstanding Student Organization.
