UNO Strengthens Ties with Korean Maritime University

Omaha - The president of Mokpo National Maritime University (MMU) in Mokpo, Korea, visited the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) this week and signed an agreement strengthening his institution’s ties to UNO.

MMU President Ahn Young-sup and UNO Chancellor John Christensen agreed to pursue a long-term institutional partnership between the two universities. MMU will send students to UNO for intensive English training, customized training in information technology and other areas of interest to MMU.

“Relationships such as this support UNO’s priorities for global engagement,” said Thomas Gouttierre, dean of International Studies & Programs at UNO. “Initially, this will mean more opportunities for students from both institutions. It is anticipated that exchange and research opportunities for faculty and staff will follow."

Both universities have agreed to develop faculty and student exchanges, including study abroad and research and development opportunities, in several areas, starting with the UNO College of Information Science and Technology (IS&T), said Deepak Khazanchi, IS&T’s associate dean for academic affairs.

The relationship between the two universities started with Chun Kwan Park, an MMU faculty member who came to UNO as a visiting professor with IS&T. His stay in Omaha and the new agreement promise to further develop academic and cultural exchanges between UNO and MMU.

UNO anticipates the first exchanges to begin in summer 2012 with intensive English classes for MMU students and summer research opportunities for faculty.

MMU, located on the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula, specializes in maritime engineering, transportation sciences and related information technology. MMU’s current enrollment is an estimated 3,200 students. Additional information about the university can be found at http://www.mmu.ac.kr/.
