Intercultural Senior Center Celebrates Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
Omaha - University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) students can experience a burst of Latino history and culture Friday, Oct. 28, at the day-long “Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) celebration.
The public is welcome from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., at the Intercultural Senior Center, located in the lower level of the Sokol Building, 2021 U St. The event will include authentic Latino cuisine, games, music and raffle. This is largest fundraiser of the year for the Center and all proceeds will go toward funding its programs for seniors.
“Although this event, which encourages diversity among our community, is supported by generous funders and other organizations, the need for program and activity support still exists,” said Carolina Padilla, ISC director. “Our educational classes, physical health and mental well-being activities, social services and various other Intercultural Senior Center services are currently strained by the large member increase in such a short amount of time.”
Live performances from Mariachi Juvenil, the Musical Stylings of Reynaldo Cervantes, Diego Santana and other local entertainers will be featured at the event. Traditional Latin-American favorites such as tacos, enchiladas and tamales will be served. Children are welcome to have their face painted, play in a bounce-house and decorate candy skulls.
There is no initial cost to attend – tickets for food and the raffle may be purchased at the event. Raffle prizes include a flat-screen TV, iPod and $100 cash. Hand-made Latino items including jewelry, artwork, decorations and sugar-skulls will also be available to purchase.
