NATA Honors Outstanding UNO Center
Omaha - At the statewide conference of the Nebraska Art Teachers Association on Sept. 24, in Kearney, President Sr. Margaret Proskovec announced the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Center for Innovation in Arts Education as the top award winner for Nebraska’s 2011-2012 Art Education awards.
NATA is a professional organization whose mission is to develop and promote quality art education in Nebraska through a statewide professional support system, with opportunities for growth and development through leadership and service.
Shari Hofschire, director of the center, accepted the Roscoe Shields Service Award, in recognition of sustained service and commitment to art education in Nebraska.
The UNO Center has had a leadership role in arts education projects with numerous arts organizations like Nebraska Masterpieces with the Nebraska Arts Council, the Omaha Mural project with Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts and the Iowa West Public Art Project.
The week-long Prairie Visions Institute, celebrating its 25th year of professional development workshops is under the direction of the Center. Prairie Visions focuses on arts integrated curriculum for educators from Nebraska and Iowa.
Numerous presentations have been given at national educational conferences on the activities of the center.
In receiving the award, Hofschire cited the strong collaborative network that the Center has developed of educators and arts organizations who understand and promote the power of the arts.
The center has previously received the UNO Chancellor’s Strategic Planning Award for Community Engagement and operates from the Department of Art and Art History in the College of Communications, Fine Arts and Media.
