Chamber Choir of Ireland to Give Concert at UNO

Omaha - The National Chamber Choir of Ireland, Ireland’s most distinguished choral ensemble, will give a concert at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) on Friday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.

The group has been celebrated internationally for its fresh and innovative sound. The choir was founded in 1991 by the composer and conductor, Colin Mawby and was developed under the direction of the Brazilian conductor Celso Antunes until 2007. In 2008, the internationally celebrated conductor Paul Hillier joined the group as artistic director and chief conductor.

“This will be a unique and wonderful concert event for our campus and the entire metropolitan area,” said Matthew Harden, director of Choral Activities and Vocal Area coordinator at UNO. “Their repertoire goes from early to contemporary music, and the choir has been a champion of new composers.”

A composer is travelling with the choir during its U.S. tour. Tarik O'Regan is the recipient of two British Composer Awards and a pair of GRAMMY nominations. The choir will be performing his new work “Acallam na Senórach.”

The concert, presented by the UNO College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media and the Department of Music, will take place in the Strauss Performing Arts Center. General admission tickets cost $30 and may be purchased online at www.unomaha.edu/music/irishchoir.php or by contacting Jennifer Walcutt at (402) 554-3427 or jwalcutt@unomaha.edu.
