Members of Western Galilee College to Visit UNO
Omaha - For four days in September – Sept. 14-18 – three members of Western Galilee College (WGC) in Akko, Israel, will visit the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) as part of their U.S. tour to share knowledge and strengthen the partnership between the two institutions.
UNO, through the Natan and Hannah Schwalb Center for Israel and Jewish Studies, and WGC are part of a broader partnership between the Western Galilee region in Northwestern Israel and the Jewish Federation of Omaha.
The visit is made possible through a generous donation by Tammy Rubin Abramowitz, in memory of her mother, Suzy Marlene Blumenthal Rubin.
The highlight of the visit is a free event that's open to the public: 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Thompson Alumni Center, 6705 Dodge St. The event is co-hosted by the Schwalb Center, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of History and the Women and Gender Studies Program.
“Women’s Concerns in Multicultural Societies: Past and Present” on Sept. 15 will feature two lectures:
• “Jewish Deserted Wives in Eastern Europe, 1857-1896” by Dr. Haim Sperber
• “Druze Women in Israel: Leadership towards Educational and Social Change” by Dr. Randa Abbas
Offering comments on the two lectures will be Dr. Karen Falconer Al-Hindi, chair of the Women and Gender Studies Program at UNO.
Sperber teaches History and Political Science at WGC. His areas of research include history of the Jewish family in 19th Century Eastern Europe, and 19th Century Anglo Jewish philanthropy and immigration.
Abbas is head of the Education Department and lecturer in the Academic Arab Education College in Haifa, as well as a lecturer in the education department of both Western Galilee College and Haifa University. A sociologist, her area of expertise is women’s empowerment in Intercultural Society.
