New UNO Tradition Welcomes Freshman Class Each Fall
Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) is beginning a new tradition this fall for its newest students.
UNO’s first Freshman Convocation is planned for noon Friday, Aug. 26, inside the Sapp Fieldhouse. The 2011-2012 academic year begins Monday, Aug. 22.
The event will feature a 45-minute ceremony that officially welcomes UNO’s freshman class, with remarks from Chancellor John Christensen, as well as other campus administrators, student leaders and alumni.
The students will receive a commemorative lapel pin marking the occasion. The students will be encouraged to wear the pin at a number of campus events throughout their academic career at UNO, including graduation.
UNO sophomores with a 3.75 grade point average (or higher) will be also be recognized on Aug. 26 as the university’s 2011 class of Sensational Sophomores. The recognition is two-fold, designed to celebrate the second-year students’ classroom achievements, but also provide the faces of students who completed their first year of college and are on track for a successful academic career.
“Just as our graduation ceremony serves as a ritual that marks the completion of undergraduate study, Freshman Convocation is a ritual to signal the beginning of a college career,” said Thomas Wallace, associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs.
Wallace added: “For years UNO has been a fantastic educational resource for our nontraditional and commuting students. But the face of the UNO student body is changing, and today resembles a traditional four-year college student who lives on campus and is active in several campus activities. Freshman Convocation is designed to celebrate and motivate these students as they move toward graduation. The UNO community is excited to celebrate the collegiate experience with our freshman students.”
A reception for the students, their families, UNO faculty and staff will follow in the Milo Bail Student Center.
