Child Care Center to Host 25th Anniversary Carnival Aug. 12
Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Child Care Center will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a free outdoor carnival from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 12.
The event is designed not only for current child care families and the UNO campus community, but anyone who has been cared for by the UNO Child Care Center since opening on Aug. 25, 1986.
The center is open year-round to the children – ages 18 months to 12 years – of UNO students, faculty, staff and alumni.
It is estimated that the center has cared for 3,000 children since 1986.
Homes on the west end of campus, just south of UNO’s Thompson Alumni Center, were purchased in 1985. One of the homes was renovated to house the UNO Child Care Center, opening the following year as the only on-campus child care facility in Nebraska. Joyce Kinney served as the center’s first director, alongside eight employees.
Today, the center is under the leadership of Dawn Hove.
When it opened in 1986, the UNO Child Care Center had room to enroll 63 children, ages 18 months to six years. It housed areas for arts and crafts, reading, building blocks and a jungle gym.
In 1986, the center only operated during the fall and spring semesters; but a year later, the university added a summer education program, which remains in place today.
In 1990, the center received national accreditation from the National Association for the Education of the Young Children.
“The UNO Child Care Center has been educating the university’s youngest students for 25 years,” Hove said. “Our mission has always been – and continues to be – to provide a high quality child care and early education program for children of students, faculty, staff and alumni at UNO, as well as opportunities for training and research to enhance the knowledge of care, education and development of young children.”
The UNO Child Care Center also provides opportunities for UNO students and members of the community to increase their knowledge of child development, developmentally appropriate teaching practices, child care administration and parent/teacher/child interactions.
“Being here for 25 years is a great success, knowing that we have given each child a great beginning to their lifelong educational goals,” Hove added. “And we will continue to just that for the next 25 years and beyond.”
The Aug. 12 celebration will feature food, games, door prizes and music by the UNO Jazz Group and the child care center’s Kevin Lloyd.
