College of Business Administration Celebrates Distinguished Alumni
Omaha - The College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) recognized four distinguished alumni at its annual spring luncheon May 12 at UNO’s Mammel Hall.
The following four alumni were presented with the College of Business Administration Distinguished Alumni Award.
Robert C. Goedken
Yamaha Electronics Corporation
Bob Goedken received his BA in management from Simpson College and his Executive MBA from the UNO College of Business Administration. His sales, marketing, and managerial experience was gained throughout the U.S. and in Japan.
After college, Goedken joined the Xerox Corporation in Des Moines, Iowa as a marketing representative. He joined the financial software startup Profitstar in 1985 as the company’s first salesperson. During his service as vice president of sales, Profitstar became the #1 solution for asset/liability management software in community banks and credit unions in the U.S. After he was promoted to SVP of sales and marketing in 1998, Profitstar became a Top 25 Growth Company in the Omaha metropolitan area and the AIM Institute’s State Technology Company of the Year in 2001.
Goedken moved to Carlsbad, California in 2001 to become president of BluePoint Solutions. After leading the software company through its startup phase, he joined Yamaha Electronics in 2003 as national sales manager. He was then promoted to general manager of the AV division (#1 market share in AV receivers in the U.S). Goedken also leads a corporate initiative creating sales process best practices among all Yamaha music divisions. In 2010, he completed the three-year Yamaha Global Institute Executive Management Course at Tokyo’s Hitotsubashi University. In the same year, he was awarded the Alumni Award for Excellence in Marketing by the UNO Department of Marketing and Management.
Bob and his wife Cathy live in Carlsbad, California, with their three children.
Daniel J. Jaksich
Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
Since 1983, Daniel Jaksich has been employed at Berkshire Hathaway Inc., a holding company with subsidiaries that operate in a wide range of industries. He has been controller since 1984 and is heavily involved in Berkshire’s consolidated financial reporting, as well as other corporate matters.
Jaksich received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a major in accounting from UNO in 1980. After graduating, he worked in public accounting at Deloitte, while earning his CPA license.
Jaksich is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Financial Executive Institute Marketing Association. He currently serves on the endowment board and finance committee of his church.
Jaksich’s wife, Jayne Timmerman, is also a CPA and they have two daughters.
A native of Glenwood, Iowa, Rod Rhoden received his BSBA degree from the College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1967, where he was a member of both Sigma Phi Epsilon and Omicron Delta Kappa. He later attended law school in California before serving active duty in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.
While in California, Rhoden worked for various automobile dealerships in Orange County. He returned to Omaha in 1971 to begin his own automobile business. His firm, Motors Management, now operates five dealerships in Omaha, Lincoln and Council Bluffs. Combined, they generate approximately 200 million dollars in annual retail sales and employ 330 full time employees. Many employees have been with the company for over 25 years—several since day one.
Recently, Rhoden is most active with the Honda and Acura brands which he represents in Omaha and Lincoln. His Honda and Acura dealerships are longtime recipients of top national awards for customer satisfaction.
Rhoden has served on various boards including UNO Alumni Association board of directors. He is currently a member of the UNO Chancellor’s Club and the University of Nebraska Foundation and President’s Club. His dealerships have been active in the athletic club programs at both Omaha and Lincoln campuses for over 35 years.
Paul G. Smith
Tenaska Enegery Inc., and Tenaska Capital Management LLC
As vice-chairman, Paul Smith co-leads Tenaska, an independent energy company concentrating on reliable, cost-efficient and environmentally responsible power plant development, ownership and operations. Tenaska also provides energy risk management services and is involved in natural gas, biofuels and electric power marketing; gas exploration, production and transportation systems; and electric transmission development.
Smith serves as vice-chairman of the Tenaska board of stakeholders and is a member of the company’s five-person executive team.
Under his leadership, Tenaska Capital Management (TCM) oversees approximately $5 billion of total assets, including power generating plants and natural gas pipelines, and gas storage, gathering and processing facilities. Smith, along with the company’s other senior managing directors, is responsible for the overall strategy, investment, operation and disposition of TPF I’s and TPF II’s investments. He is also a member of the Investment Committees for TPF I and TPF II and serves on the boards of directors for fund portfolio companies.
Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University and in 1984 received his MBA from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Smith and his wife Annette have three children.
The May 12 honorees join the 83 alumni who have been recognized by the College of Business Administration. More than 18,000 students have earned degrees from the UNO College of Business Administration.
