'Walk for Refugees' is Focus of Global Youth Service Day
Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) will host a “Walk for Refugees” as part of the internationally-celebrated Global Youth Service Day on Friday, April 15.
The walk will educate students and the community about the plight of millions of refugees in Africa, the Middle East and other war-torn areas of the world.
This is the first time UNO has hosted “Walk for Refugees” as part of Global Youth Service Day, which stresses the importance of social awareness and service to the community.
UNO student Tricia Sullivan, who is helping to plan the event, said “Walk for Refugees” participants will walk from the UNO campus to Stinson Park, near 67th Street and West Center Road. Booths along the route will educate walkers about refugees, recycling, ecology, conservation and preservation. The booths are sponsored by a number of Omaha-area nonprofit organizations.
Global Youth Service Day activities will begin at 9 a.m. and end at approximately 1:30 p.m.
“Volunteers will have opportunities to clean Stinson Park or Elmwood Park, and plant new trees,” Sullivan said.
A luncheon will be held at Stinson Park at 12:30 p.m. and will feature a presentation, including speakers from the community, remarks by Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle and internationally-themed music.
More than 200 volunteers from UNO and the community participated in last year’s Global Youth Service Day.
Global Youth Service Day is the largest service-learning event in the world. Its mission is to mobilize students to serve their communities year-round. Each year millions of students in more than 100 countries participate in the event. Global Youth Service Day was established in 1988.
