Alpha Xi Delta to Host Autism Awareness Events

Omaha - Alpha Xi Delta, a 61-year-old sorority at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), plans to expand Autism awareness across campus during the month of April.

April is Autism Awareness Month, with World Autism Awareness Day on April 2.

Alpha Xi Delta will host a campus-wide Easter egg hunt on Thursday, March 31, to encourage students to pick up eggs around campus to learn facts about autism. Three students who pick up eggs on campus will win gift cards.

Alpha Xi Delta will also hold a community-wide Easter egg hunt on Sunday, April 17, in Elmwood Park. The Easter egg hunt will begin at 1 p.m. with games and activities following the hunt.

Children of all ages are welcome to attend the free event. UNO faculty, staff, students and their families are also invited to attend the event.

Donations will be accepted, all benefitting Autism Speaks, Alpha Xi Delta's national philanthropy.

Last month, Alpha Xi Delta and Sigma Phi Epsilon held their annual Jail-n-Bail event where chapter members stand in a metal jail on the Milo Bail Student Center plaza to raise money for Autism Speaks. Each member must reach a certain “bail” in order to be let out of jail. The chapter raised over $1,400 during the event.

During April the women will also display a banner in the Milo Bail Student Center to raise awareness for autism. They will also pass out handbills with facts about the autism disorder and Autism Speaks to students around campus.

Autism Speaks is the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization. It was founded in 2005 by grandparents of a child with autism. The organization is dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism. The organization also focuses on increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Learn more at www.autismspeaks.org.
