Reading, Reception for Playwright Carlos Murillo is Jan. 27

Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Department of Theatre will welcome award-winning American playwright Carlos Murillo, whose play Dark Play or Stories for Boys will be produced by the department, running Feb. 23-26 and March 2-5.

Murillo – an assistant professor and co-head of the BFA Playwriting Program at DePaul University – will be on campus Thursday, Jan. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the UNO Theatre, located inside the Weber Fine Arts Building, for a free reception and a reading from his play, A Thick Description of Harry Smith.

The reception starts at 5 p.m., with the reading at 5:30 p.m. and a question-and-answer session at 6 p.m.

Murillo's plays have been produced at the Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville, the NYC Summer Play Festival, En Garde Arts, Soho Rep, The Hangar Theatre Lab, Theatre @ Boston Court, Circle X, Son of Semele, Actors Express, City Theatre of Miami, Walkabout Theatre in Chicago, Red Eye in Minneapolis, dirigo group in Austin and elsewhere.

His work has been developed at The Public, NY Theatre Workshop, The Goodman, South Coast Rep, Portland Center Stage, Madison Rep, the Sundance Institute, The Playwrights' Center, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, A.S.K. Theatre Projects, the Chautauqua Conservatory, Annex Theatre, UC Santa Barbara, the Loyola University Museum of Art and others.

Dark Play or Stories for Boys appeared in New Playwrights: Best New Plays of 2007 and was nominated for five LA Drama Critics Circle Awards, including Best Writing.

He was a guest artist at The Kennedy Center Summer Playwriting Intensive, the University of Iowa Playwrights Workshop, Arizona State University and serves as the master playwriting teacher for the Miami Dade County Playwriting Fellowship program.
