Campus Backpack Drive Planned for Youth Emergency Services
Omaha - In 2009 more than 160 homeless and at-risk teens spent at least one night in the Youth Emergency Services (YES) shelter in Omaha.
To help supply these teens with necessities, Maverick PR, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), will hold a backpack drive on campus with a goal of filling and distributing 100 or more backpacks.
“Say YES: Give Back with a Pack” starts Thursday, Oct. 28 and runs until Friday, Nov. 19.
MaverickPR needs more donations to fill 100 backpacks for local homeless and at risk teens served by Youth Emergency Services. Members will fill the backpacks at its meeting Sunday, Nov. 21, at 5 p.m. in Arts and Sciences Hall, Room 110.
Items especially needed are personal hygiene products, socks, boxers, stocking caps, gloves, non-perishable food and first aid products. The non-profit organization, YES, helps homeless and at risk young people ages 12 to 21, by providing shelter and advocacy programs. The Youth Street Outreach Program tracks down these teens and offers the help that they need.
“The teens helped by Youth Emergency Services need the support they don’t otherwise have,” said Kristin Webb, Maverick PR president. “They are young adults like us but without a home and basic necessities. Students can easily donate a few dollars to help a teen in need.”
Donations can be dropped off in the bin located in Arts and Sciences Hall, Room 140. The chapter is also accepting cash or check donations to help pay for the cost of the backpacks. Checks should be made out to UNO PRSSA-YES and dropped off or mailed to UNO PRSSA in care of Karen Weber, faculty adviser, ASH 140-E, University of Nebraska at Omaha, 6001 Dodge St., Omaha, Nebraska, 68182-0112.
