Fashion Show Raises $6,000 for MADD Nebraska
Omaha - MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Nebraska received more than $6,000 – both in-kind and sponsored donations – at Fashion Victim, a Sept. 30 fashion show and fundraiser organized by University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) student Amy Wieczorek.
The second-annual event was held in memory of Morgan Hohnbaum and Josh Milana, two of Wieczorek’s friends who died after being hit by a drunk driver in Lincoln in 2007.
In attendance were Sally Ganem, the First Lady of Nebraska; Gary Cooper, MADD/RAD race car owner; and Simera Reynolds, MADD Nebraska director. Speakers included area survivors, victims and offenders.
"The event was a huge success,” Wieczorek said. "We received great support from UNO and the community this year. The number of dollars and attendance are great indicators of a successful event; however, I think the impact the fashion show leaves with people is more important. The number of potential lives saved isn't one you can count."
Event sponsors included MADD Nebraska and UNO Midnight Mojo, an anti-drinking campaign for students. All proceeds were donated to MADD in honor of Hohnbaum and Milana.
Wieczorek is a community health major at UNO who is also a fashion model. As the current Miss Nebraska ANTSO titleholder, drinking and driving prevention and awareness is Wieczorek’s platform. Since the death of her friends, Wieczorek has been determined to make a difference. At ANTSO Nationals in July, Wieczorek was the first ANTSO Nebraska Miss titleholder to place in the Top 10 based on her platform, and brought national attention to the issues in Omaha.
The night’s fashions were provided by several designers featured at 2010 Omaha Fashion Week: Shamina Wiek, Rasheena Nichols, John Pryor, Zara Gonzales, Buf Reynolds, Yolanda Diaz and Juantiesha.
