Oct. 21 Good Deeds Fair to Provide Volunteer Opportunities for UNO Students
Omaha - About 50 area nonprofit agencies will offer volunteer opportunities for University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) students, faculty and staff at the inaugural Good Deeds Volunteer Fair on Thursday, Oct. 21.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside the Milo Bail Student Center Nebraska Room on the UNO campus, representatives from local nonprofits will educate students, faculty and staff about their organizations and provide ways to volunteer.
“We encourage the UNO community to serve on a one-time, volunteer basis with our community partners after attending the Good Deeds Volunteer Fair,” said Sara Woods, College of Public Affairs and Community Service associate dean. “The fair is an opportunity to introduce our students to volunteering and community engagement, which is one of our university’s goals of serving the Omaha metropolitan area.”
At UNO, more than 75 percent of incoming freshmen indicate that they expect and seek community service activities while undergraduates.
According to the Service-Learning Academy at UNO, students, faculty and staff have engaged in the community through university-sponsored service days since 2003, contributing more than $1.3 million in volunteer hours of service.
Students who attend the Oct. 21 event and document their volunteer hours anytime between Oct. 18 and Dec. 31 will be entered into a drawing to win an iPod. The winner will be announced at the beginning of the Spring 2011 semester in late January.
The Good Deeds Volunteer Fair is presented by the College of Public Affairs and Community Service, the Service-Learning Academy and Student Organizations and Leadership Programs. A second volunteer fair is planned for March 2011.
