Brignoni Named Latina of the Year
Omaha - Gigi Brignoni, assistant professor of Teacher Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), will be recognized at the sixth annual Latino Heritage Awards Banquet on Friday, Sept. 24 at Creighton University.
The Barrientos Scholarship Foundation has named Brignoni Latina of the Year for 2010.
Brignoni has lived in Omaha for the past four years and has made an impact in the Latino community through the Nebraska Humanities Council Prime Time program, and service-learning with the Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands, South Omaha site, Mammel Unit. She also works with five other Office of Latino/Latin American (OLLAS) colleagues in the Douglas County Detention Center by teaching writing and literacy sessions to Spanish-speaking Latino detainees. For Teacher Education, Brignoni teaches language arts, ESL (English as a Second Language) methodology and bilingual education courses.
Brignoni received her bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies from California State University, Long Beach; her master’s degree in Education from California State University, Fullerton; and her doctorate in Educational Studies from Claremont Graduate University.
The Latino Heritage Awards is a fundraiser to raise dollars for scholarship, while also recognizing outstanding Latino leaders in the Omaha metro area. The evening will include a networking reception, dinner, awards, entertainment, scholarship recipients and keynote speaker: Patrick M. Velasquez, director of the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services at the University of California, San Diego.
This year's other honorees include: Lifetime Achievement: Reynaldo Cervantes; Latino of the Year: Louis Valencia; Arts: Jorge Gomez; Education: Toni Hernandez; Community Service: Luis Espinosa; Youth: Gabriel Gutierrez; and Business: State Farm Insurance.
