UNO Named Top Military Friendly School for Second Consecutive Year

Omaha - G.I. Jobs magazine has named the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) one of its top Military Friendly Schools for 2011.

UNO, for the second consecutive year, received the honor from the magazine and is among the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that embrace America’s veterans as students.

Military Friendly Schools actively recruit military students and implement military-friendly policies for continuing education. At UNO, military focused offerings and programs include:

• An office on Offutt Air Force Base providing most UNO student services;
• Online degree programs;
• A Veterans Services office on campus to assist with GI Bill and other veteran education benefits; and
• Flexible deployment policy.

Also offered at UNO is a Bachelor of General Studies degree featuring more than 45 areas of concentration, many of which are specifically designed to meet the career needs of military personnel. The degree recognizes previous college and some military credit, and gives 10 credit hours for at least one year of active duty service.

The UNO program also has advisors who are highly experienced working with military and veteran students.

The current enrollment of active and veteran military personnel at UNO is more than 500 students. Undergraduate and graduate classes are available for military personnel at Offutt Air Force Base, on campus and through a variety of online programs.

The United States Air Force initiated the Bootstrap Program in 1951 to encourage members of the military to ‘lift themselves by the bootstraps’ by earning a college degree. UNO – then Omaha University – was one of only a handful of institutions nationwide to participate. Under the program, more than 12,000 individuals received their degrees.

“The Military Friendly Schools list is the gold standard in letting veterans know which schools will offer them the greatest opportunity, flexibility and overall experience,” said Derek Blumke, president of Student Veterans of America and a member of the list’s Academic Advisory Board.
