Free Food, Live Music, Pep Rally Part of Welcome Week 2010

Omaha - New students, returning students, faculty and staff the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) will enjoy free food, live music, outdoor activities and a screening of the 1985 film “The Goonies” during the first week of the fall 2010 semester.

Welcome Week – Monday, Aug. 23 through Friday, Aug. 27 – is designed to celebrate the beginning of a new academic year and, for about 2,500 students, the beginning of their undergraduate college careers at UNO.

A number of free events are planned during Welcome Week, a popular annual offering for UNO students, many of whom reconnect after a summer of travel, working, classes or studying abroad.

When UNO students participate in Welcome Week events, their attendance will also support the stocking of food pantry shelves at the Salvation Army. The fundraiser is sponsored by No Frills Supermarkets.

UNO officials estimate that about 12,000 students, faculty and staff will participate in the week-long celebration.

The week’s schedule of events is as follows. Free lunch is served Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All activities run 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Unless otherwise indicated, the daytime events occur on the Milo Bail Student Center outdoor plaza on the south side of the building.

Wells Fargo has returned as the sponsor of 2010 Welcome Week.

Supporting sponsor No Frills Supermarkets will donate cans of food to the Salvation Army Food Pantry based on the number of UNO students who attends 2010 Welcome Week events. The UNO Service-Learning Academy and the University of Nebraska Foundation organized the community engagement initiative. A display with more information about the charitable initiative will be constructed during Welcome Week on the first floor of the Milo Bail Student Center, near the north entrance.
