School of Communication Celebrates Communication Week
Omaha - The School of Communication at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) will award more than $65,000 in scholarship money to 36 students at the 55th Annual Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 29.
The banquet culminates a celebration of Communication Week, “Communication & Community.” The event begins at 5 p.m. with a wine and cheese reception followed by a 6 p.m. dinner at the Thompson Alumni Center.
In addition to the scholarship presentations, the school will recognize the following:
Distinguished Service—Pat Dargantes, retired coordinator UNO Training, Academic Partnerships for Instruction
Alumni Community Service—Marsha Kalkowski, English and journalism teacher Marian High School
Alumni Achievement—Deb Dice, senior operations trainer ACI Worldwide
Communication Achievement— Marguerita Washington, The Omaha Star
Rising Star—Kelsey Archer, assistant marketing director, Clarkson College
Lifetime Achievement— Mort Crim, founder Mort Crim Communications Inc.
Other events on Thursday include: Scholarship Recipient Breakfast at 9 a.m. in the Chancellor’s Room, Milo Bail Student Center; Alumni panel at 1 p.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center Dodge Room. Panelists are Crim, Dice, Kalkowski and Karen Furbush, manager of PeopleSoft Development at TriWest Healthcare Alliance in Phoenix.
Communication Week kicked off with the High School Media Conference on April 22 where more than 300 high school journalism students and advisers attended. Events continue Monday, April 26, with a poster session presented by students from Dr. Lynette Leonard’s Persuasion class. The poster session takes place from 4 to 5:15 p.m. in the Dodge Room, third floor of the Milo Bail Student Center.
Maverick PR, the UNO chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA); its student public relations firm, Maverick Solutions; and the National Student Advertising Competition team will give presentations on Tuesday, April 27 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Chancellor’s Room, second floor of the Milo Bail Student Center.
