UNO PR Students Want 400 Donations for Toys for Tots
Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America has launched a drive to gather 400 new toys for the Marines Toys for Tots campaign.
Due to the large snow storm cancelling school Dec. 8-9, PRSSA will extend its campaign through Friday, Dec. 18.
PRSSA will host a special toy drop-off event Thursday, Dec. 10 in the Fireplace Lounge on the first floor of the Milo Bail Student Center. Students who drop off toys that day will receive a free cup of hot chocolate.
The recession has left many families facing hard times and more children need toys now than ever before with the Toys for Tots program.
“We are not immune to the downturn in the economy and one of the first things to go is the luxuries, including charity,” said Richard Carter, senior economic adviser to Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb. “We must make an effort to give what we can.”
UNO PRSSA students want to expand from last year’s achievement of 300 toys to 400 toys this year by inviting the campus, the public and local businesses to join the drive. Those who wish to donate can bring new, unwrapped toys to collection centers located on campus: Arts and Sciences Hall Room 140, Weber Fine Arts Building Theatre Box Office and the Milo Bail Student Center in front of the bookstore.
For those who don’t wish to visit the UNO campus, the Cheesecake Factory in Omaha and Blue Planet Natural Grill will also collect toys on behalf of UNO PRSSA. Donations can also be mailed to UNO PRSSA, Arts and Sciences Hall 140-E, 6001 Dodge St., Omaha, NE, 68182
The Toys for Tots program has given more than 370 million toys away to needy children since its inception in 1948. UNO PRSSA has been a proud partner of the program since 2004.
“Our chapter has placed a priority on serving children through its projects for Toys for Tots and the Omaha Food Bank,” said Karen Weber, UNO PRSSA faculty adviser. “Children are the most vulnerable in these tough times. By partnering with local businesses and encouraging other UNO departments to participate we hope to meet or exceed our goal of 400 new toys.”
