Lecture Launched to Remember Charles Gildersleeve
Omaha - Charles Gildersleeve, a founding faculty member of the International Studies major at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), was always available to help students with study-abroad independent studies courses. His guest lecture each semester in the International Studies introduction course was a highlight for all students.
Gildersleeve, who passed away earlier this month after a more than 40-year career at UNO, took it upon himself to make international students feel at home in class and on campus with his inimitable warmth. Until his death, Gildersleeve was a faculty member in the Department of Geography/Geology at UNO.
In memory of his contributions to International Studies majors and international students at UNO, International Studies and Programs will inaugurate and sponsor the annual Charles Gildersleeve “Know-Your-World” lecture. The lecture will be held every fall as part of International Education Week.
The first lecture is planned for noon Monday, Nov. 16 in the Milo Bail Student Center Dodge Room. Testimony on Gildersleeve’s contributions to international education will be made.
“Gildersleeve was the quintessential member of the UNO family,” said Tom Gouttierre, dean of International Studies and Programs at UNO. “Everyone in International Studies and Programs, including many who were his students, join his family and the ‘citizens of Cupcake Corners’ in mourning a wonderful and inspiring human being.”
For more information on the lecture, call (402) 554-2376.
Please note: The UNO campus will host a memorial service for Gildersleeve Thursday, Oct. 22 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Thompson Alumni Center, 6705 Dodge St., on the UNO campus. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the University of Nebraska Foundation Charles Gildersleeve Scholarship Fund. The UNO flag will also be lowered to half-staff on the 22nd in Gildersleeve's honor.
