Omaha - Organizations and individuals in the Omaha area are being asked to nominate senior women for the 2009 Women of Wisdom Awards, sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) Lifelong Learning Initiative. Awards will be given this spring to three women over the age of 50 who exemplify the spirit of community contribution while providing a meaningful example of successful aging.
Nomination forms are available at http://www.unomaha.edu/lifelonglearning or by calling (402) 554-4897 or (402) 554-2292.
Nominations are due Jan. 12, 2009.
The minimum nomination requirements include:
• Name, age, address and phone number of the nominee.
• The nominator’s relationship to the nominee.
• Information on the nominee’s actions, activities and involvement in the community and its results.
• Reasons why the nominee's work or advocacy was significant and identification of those who benefited (individuals or groups).
• Any other additional information that effectively creates a strong picture of the nominees’ accomplishments.
“We’re extremely excited about this event and receiving nominations from the community,” said Patricia Adams, director of UNO’s Lifelong Learning Initiative. “We know that senior women make a tremendous difference through their work. Highlighting those efforts will be extremely rewarding.”
Award recipients will be honored at a luncheon and community-wide program, "Celebrate: Women of Wisdom: Because Aging is a Lifetime Event” set for May 1, 2009. The keynote speaker will be bestselling author of “Ireland, A Novel” and “Tippery, A Novel,” Frank Delaney.
This is the fifth annual "Celebrate: Women of Wisdom" luncheon, which will be held at the Holiday Inn Central from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to the public. Tickets are $40 a person; $35 for seniors over the age of 60. Corporate tables are available and prices begin at $500.

UNO will celebrate its 100th anniversary beginning October 8, 2008. This celebration will recognize the partnership among the City of Omaha, its citizens and UNO to build a vibrant and dynamic community. The centennial theme is “UNO: Central To Our City Since 1908.” This theme acknowledges the past contributions of UNO to the community and sets the stage for great things to come.
UNO, inaugurated in 1968, emerged from the Municipal University of Omaha, established in 1931, which grew out of the University of Omaha founded in 1908. For Centennial information, go to http://www.unomaha.edu/100/.
