UNO Public Relations Students Win National Award for Community Service

Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) has earned a national award in community service.

The F.H. Teahan National Award for Community Service recognizes a chapter that has performed outstanding community service throughout the year. Ten members of the chapter accepted the award Oct. 27 at the National PRSSA Conference in Detroit. This is the third time in five years the UNO chapter has won the first-place honor.

Among the service projects PRSSA students completed are Santa Paws, a fundraiser for the Town and Country Animal Shelter; U.S. Marines Toys for Tots; National Organ Donor Awareness Day; and Kids N Kans Carnival, a fund raiser for the Omaha Food Bank.

The UNO PRSSA chapter, Maverick PR, is sponsored by the School of Communication in the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media.

"We are extremely pleased with the national success of our students," said Dr. Jeremy Lipschultz, school director. "It is particularly rewarding to see this high level of PR skill applied to positive community engagements."

UNO will celebrate its 100th anniversary beginning October 8, 2008. This celebration will recognize the partnership among the City of Omaha, its citizens and UNO to build a vibrant and dynamic community. The centennial theme is “UNO: Central To Our City Since 1908.” This theme acknowledges the past contributions of UNO to the community and sets the stage for great things to come.

UNO, inaugurated in 1968, emerged from the Municipal University of Omaha, established in 1931, which grew out of the University of Omaha founded in 1908. For Centennial information, go to http://www.unomaha.edu/100/.
