UNO Professor to Study OPS Student Recess
Omaha – Omaha Public Schools students could benefit from a physical activity program developed by Dr. Jennifer Huberty from the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).
Recently, Dr. Huberty received a $360,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to increase physical activity at recess. The program’s goal is to find the necessary components that advance children’s engagement in physical activity during recess time.
The Ready for Recess program is a two-year study that will monitor third- through sixth-grade students from 12 Omaha schools to determine if trained staff and recreational equipment will have an impact on the children’s physical activity levels during recess.
“Without the ability to choose physical activities, children may only be active during 20 percent of their recess time,” Dr. Huberty said.
It is the research team’s hope that the Ready for Recess program will create an environment that promotes physical activity while still maintaining high academic ideals.

UNO will celebrate its 100th anniversary beginning October 8, 2008. This celebration will recognize the partnership among the City of Omaha, its citizens and UNO to build a vibrant and dynamic community. The centennial theme is “UNO: Central To Our City Since 1908.” This theme acknowledges the past contributions of UNO to the community and sets the stage for great things to come.
UNO, inaugurated in 1968, emerged from the Municipal University of Omaha, established in 1931, which grew out of the University of Omaha founded in 1908. For Centennial information, go to http://www.unomaha.edu/100/.
