Mike Vax Big Band Concert at UNO Set for April 30
Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) will host one of the nation’s premier jazz groups, the Mike Vax Big Band, on Wednesday, April 30. While on campus, members of the band will present a free workshop open to all UNO students.
“This is a rare opportunity to hear and see just a top flight big band that is still actively touring and recording,” said Pete Madsen, coordinator of UNO Jazz Studies. “Anyone who is a fan of jazz, really of music, should consider coming out to the concert.”
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Strauss Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors; and $15 for the general public. The Metropolitan Area Youth Jazz Orchestra will be the opening act. For tickets, call (402) 554-3427.
The Mike Vax Big Band features members who are alumni from the 1956 to 1978 Stan Kenton Orchestras. The Big Band performs for festivals, clinics, concerts, cruises and dances. It tours annually and plays some of the well-known music of the Stan Kenton Orchestra and--in keeping with Kenton’s insistence on not just performing nostalgia type music--the band also performs fresh material written in the Kenton style, as well as other original material written by band members.
“This is a living big band, not just a juke box of oldies,” Madsen said. “I’m especially looking forward to the master classes that our students will take part in before the concert. This is experiential learning at its finest.”
Band leader Mike Vax has led a big band off and on since his days at College of the Pacific more than 40 years ago. During his career he served as first trumpet, soloist and road manager of the Stan Kenton Orchestra. He also has produced or directed at more than 30 jazz festivals and has performed at workshops for more than 2,000 high schools, colleges and universities all over the world.
