Women's Walk Luncheon Welcomes Jackie Joyner Kersee March 5
Omaha - Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner Kersee is the keynote speaker at this year’s Diet Pepsi/Women’s Walk kick-off luncheon. The March 5 event at the Doubletree Hotel is open to the public and begins at 11:30 a.m.
“We are very fortunate and excited to have Jackie Joyner Kersee join us for this year’s event,” said UNO Associate Athletic Director Rose Shires. “She is a strong-willed competitor from a family of talented athletes. Jackie is a great role model for all athletes.”
The Diet Pepsi/Women’s Walk, now entering its 23rd year, has raised more than $3 million for scholarships and program enhancements for female student-athletes at UNO.
This year’s walk is Saturday, April 19.
The luncheon, sponsored by First National Bank, features the induction of John Mock, Tim Fitzgerald and Ginny Willingham into the Women’s Walk Hall of Honor.
Tickets for the luncheon are $55 per person or $500 for a table of 10. Reservations are available by calling the Women’s Walk office at (402) 554-2533.
Kersee is often regarded as the best all-around female athlete in the world. She has won three gold, one silver and one bronze Olympic medals. She holds the American record for the long jump at 23 feet, nine inches and was the first woman to earn more than 7,000 point in the heptathlon.
Kersee officially retired from competition in 2001 but remained active in the Jackie Joyner Kersee Foundation, which she established in 1988 to address the need in her community for a resource for youth development, leadership and athletics.
