UNO Heartland Community Flute Choir to Perform Holiday Concert at Lauritzen Gardens
Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Heartland Community Flute Choir (HCFC) will sound off the holiday season with a concert at Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha's Botanical Center, 100 Bancroft St., on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m.
"Experience the beautiful sonorities of 30 flutes in the festive setting of the gardens during their Holiday Harmony Concert Series," said Christine Beard, assistant professor of flute at UNO. "The concert, featuring secular and sacred tunes in addition to holiday music, is free with paid admission to the gardens."
Under the direction of Beard the HCFC was founded in 2003 and is co-sponsored by UNO, the Nebraska Flute Club and Gemeinhardt/Gemstone Musical Instruments. A non-auditioned ensemble boasting more than 30 members from Nebraska and western Iowa, the HCFC plays on C flutes, piccolos, alto and bass flutes, and performs a variety of literature consisting of original works for flute choir and arrangements of classical masterpieces, as well as traditional and popular tunes.
Since its inception, the HCFC has performed a diverse repertoire across the state, as well as world premiere performances of new arrangements for flute choir. In addition to giving an average of four local concerts in and around Omaha each year, the HCFC was selected to perform at the Nebraska Music Educators Association Convention in 2004, and the North Central Division Music Educators National Conference in 2006.
"The group is currently awaiting notification of acceptance to perform at the National Flute Association Convention to be held in Kansas City, Mo., in August 2008 which will include the world premiere of a new composition commissioned by the HCFC from UNO faculty composer Barry Ford," Beard said.
The Dec. 2 concert is $6 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, contact Beard at 554.2685 or Maureen Thompsen, Lauritzen Gardens events coordinator, at 346.4002, extension 222.
