UNO Art Gallery to Open “Brett Reif: In Digestion” on Nov. 30

Omaha - The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Art Gallery will open a new exhibit, “Brett Reif: In Digestion,” on Friday, Nov. 30.  A two-hour opening reception will be held that evening beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The solo exhibition features work by A. Brett Reif, an assistant professor in the School of the Foundation Year at the Kansas City Art Institute.  Non-traditional media, sculpture and installation are major areas of interest for Reif.  He typically works in automobile grease, Post-It notes, test tubes and plastic wrap.  Recent works have involved deep-frying objects and materials (from Barbie Dolls to phone books) to create installations.  The exhibit at UNO also explores the use of unconventional materials and unorthodox processes to charge or twist the inherent meanings of objects.

“I try not to make idyllic, beautiful things that attempt to send a viewer into rapture,” Reif said.  “I would rather attempt to strip away the insulation and reconnect the viewer to their environment by making bizarre and perplexing objects that exemplify our current discordant ethics.”

Originally from New Orleans, Reif received his bachelor of fine arts degree from Loyola University and his master of fine arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Reif has been teaching at the college level since 1997 and has taught at Canisius College and State University of New York in Buffalo, N.Y., and Loyola University.  His work has been exhibited at Artspace in Kansas City, Mo.; Spaces Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio; Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center and Buffalo Artist Studio in Buffalo, N.Y.; the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, N.C.; and the Ackland Museum in Ackland, N.C.

The UNO Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Weber Fine Arts Building.  The exhibitions are free, handicapped accessible and open to the public.  Gallery Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday noon to 4 p.m.; Thursday noon to 8 p.m.; and Saturday 1 to 4 p.m.  The Gallery will be closed for semester break Dec. 22 through Jan. 14. “Brett Reif: In Digestion” will be on display through Friday, Jan. 18.  For further information, call (402) 554-2796.
