UNO Recognizes Campus Community Nov. 15
Omaha - The 2007 Strategic Planning Awards and Step Up Awards will be presented at the UNO Fall Awards Reception 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 at the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom. The entire UNO community is invited to attend.
The UNO Strategic Planning Awards recognize units, both academic and non-academic, and cross disciplinary initiatives that exemplify a commitment to furthering the strategic goals of UNO.
The Step Up Award, created by Chancellor John Christensen, recognizes individuals and groups of faculty, staff or students who, in the last year, volunteered to take on and complete unexpected university-related work that was above and beyond the scope of their normal responsibilities.
The award winners are listed below.
Strategic Planning Awards
Student Focus - Library Science Education Programs (College of Education)
This is the only program in the region serving five states, preparing school and non-school professionals via distance education with collaboration among state associations, two-year institutions and universities. Service-learning opportunities and advising are two focuses of this program which now has more than 200 students.
Academic Excellence - School of Public Administration
The department, which has a top-rated graduate program in the United States, is home to researchers and scholars who strive to achieve academic excellence both in the classroom and through research and community outreach.
Community Engagement - Public Relations Student Society of America
This student organization emphasizes that community service teaches its members valuable professional skills while also giving back to the community. PRSSA members are proud to be involved with several community projects including the Omaha Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
Step Up Awards
Camille’s Restaurant (Chuck Perry, owner)
Camille’s has been very generous in supporting the UNO Service Learning Academy, especially the Fall Break and Seven Days of Service projects.
Deborah Koehler (staff support, Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders)
Deb played a critical role in departmental transitions over the past year.
Hayley Patton (manager, UNO Offutt program)
Hayley planned, organized and implemented new testing services for the Offutt Air Force Base community.
John Amend (director, Facilities Management and Planning)
John has helped UNO in moving forward during one of our most exciting physical development periods.
HPER Renovation Project Team (Dan Blanke, Joe Kaminski, Marcia Adler and Wade Robinson)
This group spearheaded the efforts to gain approval for the expansion and renovation of the HPER building.
Fran served as a UNO volunteer this past year by taking the lead in creating the UNO Hockey season ticket marketing campaign.
“Sustainable UNO?” Primary Faculty (John Noble, John Bartle and Harmon Maher)
These faculty members were the principles in guiding the course from its inception through the assignment of the final grades.
Farida Majid (advisor, Information Science and Technology)
Farida has gone above and beyond with her contributions to the college and university this past year.
Office of Multicultural Affairs
This office has recently launched new outreach efforts to engage the students, parents and community members, along with offering new and enhanced programs.
NASA Nebraska Space Grant Office (Scott Tarry, Michaela Schaaf, Karisa Vlasek and Melissa Wragge)
Directed and managed the NASA Office and its programs during transitions.
Jeff French (professor of Psychology and Biology)
Jeff displays tireless and countless efforts to maintain the quality of the animal care programs at UNO, especially during the AAALAC site visit.
