Irish Curator to Discuss Painting at UNO on Oct. 24
Omaha - Síghle Bhreathnach-Lynch, curator of Irish Painting for the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, will visit the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and discuss an iconic 19th century Irish painting Wed., Oct. 24, at noon in the Milo Bail Student Center Council Room.
Her presentation, “The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife: Representation and Reality,” focuses on an 1854 work of art that depicts the marriage of a Norman leader to the daughter of the King of Leinster in 1170. Generally seen as the first event leading to English rule over Ireland, the painting has been analyzed in relation to its reception by British viewers in 1854, and changing perceptions of it since that time. Light refreshments served.
The Medieval and Renaissance Studies Interdisciplinary Minor--in association with the Departments of Art History, English, and History at UNO—has organized the event. For more information about the event or Medieval and Renaissance Studies, contact Lisabeth Buchelt, assistant professor of medieval British and Irish literature at UNO, at (402) 554-2894.
