Latino Heritage Month Events Begin Sept. 17 at UNO

Omaha - The annual Latino Heritage Month celebration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) kicks off Monday, Sept. 17. All events are free and open to the public, and will take place on the UNO campus.

The schedule - which includes a variety of music, food and presentations - is listed below.

Monday, Sept. 17
- Musical performance by SABOR, the South Omaha Arts Institute's Latin rhythm band
Noon to 1 p.m.
Milo Bail Student Center (MBSC) Plaza

Wednesday, Sept. 19
- Poetry reading and talk by Latino-American poet and scholar Francisco X. Alarcón (A book signing will be held with Alarcón immediately following his talk.)
4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
William H. and Dorothy Thompson Alumni Center

Tuesday, Oct. 2
- Latin Culture Mixer (featuring food, games and socializing)
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
MBSC Dodge Room

Friday, October 12
- "True Stories of ‘Illegal' Border Crossings: Narrating the Non-Nation"
Presentation by Marta Caminero-Santangelo, associate professor of English and founder of Latino Studies at the University of Kansas
(This event is being held in conjunction with the UNO Office of Latino/Latin American Studies Charla Series.)
