International Piccolo Symposium Aug. 2-4 at UNO
Omaha - The sounds of the piccolo will emanate throughout the halls of the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Strauss Performing Arts Center Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 2-4, during the first-ever International Piccolo Symposium (IPS).
"This is the first event of its kind in the world, focusing specifically on the piccolo, and it will feature guest artists," said Christine Beard, professor of flute at UNO.
Flutists are traveling from across the United States and Canada for the three-day event to participate in performance classes, seminars and recitals. Guest artists will include Nicola Mazzanti, piccoloist of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra in Italy; Lois Herbine from Orchestra 2001 in Philadelphia; and Beard, the Roy Seaman Piccolo Artist at UNO.
Concerts featuring the guest artists will be performed in the Strauss Performing Arts Center Recital Hall Thursday through Friday, Aug. 2-3, at 7:30 p.m. The final recital, featuring the symposium participants, is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4, at 5:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door for $10 for individual concerts or $25 for all three events.
The symposium is sponsored by Gemstone Musical Instruments, The Flutist Network, project Piccolo Rebirth, and UNO.
